Australia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading classical CD label ABC Classics today confirmed that it has signed folksinger Sarah\u00c2\u00a0Calderwood to make a solo album. The groundbreaking deal \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the first in which a solo folksinger has\u00c2\u00a0been signed to a major classical label – follows the success of Celtic Road, the album by Sarah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s band\u00c2\u00a0Sunas, which spent six consecutive weeks in the ARIA Classical Top 10 and achieved high rotation on\u00c2\u00a0ABC Classic FM and Local Radio playlists when released in February this year.<\/p>\n
The band went on to headline both the National Folk Festival in April and National Celtic Festival in\u00c2\u00a0June, to extraordinary acclaim.<\/p>\n
But it was Sarah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s solo vocal on the traditional Bushes & Briars, accompanied by the Melbourne\u00c2\u00a0Symphony Orchestra, which drew audiences to the album from well beyond the folk community.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcThe response to Sarah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s haunting voice has been amazing,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 says Manager of ABC Classics Martin\u00c2\u00a0Buzacott, who discovered the 29-year-old singer performing with Scottish song-writing legend\u00c2\u00a0Dougie MacLean at a semi-private concert in the Wollemi National Park last year.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAlthough she sings in the distinctive folk style, Sarah is actually classically trained, has perfect pitch,\u00c2\u00a0and very sophisticated musical\u00c2\u00a0tastes, so her association with ABC Classics is more natural than it\u00c2\u00a0might first appear.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcI am so thrilled to have the opportunity to make this solo album,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 says Sarah, who is already in the\u00c2\u00a0studio working with Celtic Road\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s producer Geoff McGahan, ambient music\u00c2\u00a0specialist Mirko Ruckels,\u00c2\u00a0and leading orchestral arranger Jessica Wells. \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcHaving these trusted colleagues plus ABC Classics and\u00c2\u00a0its partners at Universal Music Australia behind the album is like a dream come true.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n
With its roots firmly in the Celtic tradition, the album will feature immortal tunes like Wild Mountain\u00c2\u00a0Thyme, The Unquiet Grave and Poor Wayfaring Stranger, alongside contemporary classics such as\u00c2\u00a0Annie Lennox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Into the West and a particularly compelling version of Peter Gabriel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mercy Street.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcThese are some of my favourite songs from the traditional Celtic and contemporary British\u00c2\u00a0repertoire,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 says Sarah, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcand we have the luxury this time of a full symphony orchestra plus Jess and\u00c2\u00a0Mirko\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s beautiful, ambient atmospherics, as well as \u00e2\u20ac\u201c on a couple of tracks – the musical\u00c2\u00a0loves of my\u00c2\u00a0life in my band Sunas!\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n
Recording moved to Hobart last week where the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra conducted by\u00c2\u00a0Andrew Greene played several of Wells\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 arrangements including the traditional songs The Maid of\u00c2\u00a0the River, I Am Stretched On Your Grave, and The Blue Cockade, the latter featuring a high-profile\u00c2\u00a0male Australian singer as Sarah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s duet partner. \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcNo names, no pack-drill just yet,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Sarah laughs.<\/p>\n
Also featured will be Irish-based Alan Kelly, acknowledged within the folk community as the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0greatest accordion player, whose own new album Small Town and Famous Nights will be released on\u00c2\u00a0ABC Classics in October, plus Berlin-based Australian guitarist Bob Spencer, former Savage Garden\u00c2\u00a0bass player Lee Novak, and virtuoso Australian percussionist David Jones.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like a who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-who of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s great musicians,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Sarah says. \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m so inspired to be surrounded\u00c2\u00a0by this musical company.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n
Sarah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s album, entitled As Night Falls, will be released on 4 November, with advance tracks being\u00c2\u00a0pre-released on iTunes from early October.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
